Over the years Historians have been slowly getting better at looking into the past and finding the most accurate depiction of the events. For the longest time, historians only looked into the lives of the white men in the time of colonization. This kind of thinking makes the history that we think happened distorted, and with many holes in the truth. When we look harder into the people involved with the colonization and building of what would one day be Canada, we find that it was more than just the white men who were instrumental in this process.

If we look into everyone who came to the colonies to start a new life and help build the country, we find that women were one of the most important contributors. There were women who started businesses and women who taught the colonies, however one of the most incredible groups was the Filles Du Roi. These women risked everything they had to sail across the seas for a new life. Once there, they were married off to the single men in the colonies, and began families.

These women sailed across the sea with only the knowledge that they would have some man when they got there. They did not know who the man was, or what he looked like, only that he worked in the colonies. Although they were able to pick which man they wanted, there was no guarantee that the men would be good, and what they wanted in life. The fact that these women still made this journey with all of these uncertainties shows just how brave they were. Once the Filles Du Roi found a husband, they began families, and started populating the colonies. Everyone who is a descendant of the colonists is a descendant of one of the Filles Du Rois. This shows just how important these women were. Without these women, the colonies would not have been able to grow the way they did.

Their contibutions to population was not the only contribution these women made. Because most of the people in the colonies lived in the rural areas, there was a lot of work to do just to survive. This meant that the women who came to the colonies were not able to only do things such as keeping house, they had to work on the fields and get their hands dirty. The women of the colonies worked just as hard as the men, and contributed just as much to the building of the colonies.

If we were to just look at the contributions to the colonies made by the white men, we would miss the great accomplishments made by the women of the time. This lack of information would leave blanks in how Canada actually became a country, and would leave out some of the most important people of the time. When we “do” history we have to keep in mind all of the contributors, and understand their importance.
